Many fans of cult movies and cheesy horror films from the Eighties and Nineties will remember Elvira The Mistress of the Dark. The fun and sexy TV hostess of Movie Macabre was known for her valley girl commentary on B-grade horror movies, sassy double entendres, and most of all her memorable revealing curvy black dress. She quickly became a cultural phenomenon in the 80's, gaining further exposure in commercials, television guest appearances, and even in her own 1988 theatrical movie! Ageless actress Cassandra Peterson still continues to play Elvira to this day and now is a chance for you to dress up as her for Halloween!
Elvira has many screaming fans, and they’ll be waiting for you when you dress up in her classic outfit! Known to be cruelly funny and sexy at the same time, Elvira can win over any audience and leave them in stitches. Elvira's Halloween costume comes with the infamous black dress which is very elegant yet still scary enough with the tattered and torn trim around the sleeves and hem of the dress. It also comes with a satin-like belt with a gold-colored buckled scabbard that holds Elvira’s dagger. And to literally top off and complete her wonderful costume, you need to get her signature bouffant black wig for the total transformation into the Mistress of the Dark!
So who is really Elvira. In real life, she is played by Cassandra Peterson, an actress who was the host of a local Los Angeles TV show called “Movie Macabre“, which was a weekly horror movie series. It is there that she donned her long, alluring black gown as she introduced each movie and made funny quips during breaks. Ms. Peterson was born in Manhattan, Kansas, but her family later moved to Colorado Springs. After graduating from high school, Ms. Peterson left for the big city, Las Vegas, and became one of the youngest showgirls in history. In addition to being a showgirl and an actress, Ms. Peterson is also a singer and was the lead singer of the group Latins Ochanats.
The Elvira franchise grew enormously as there were a flood of Elvira video games, movies, costumes and other Elvira merchandise that flooded the market. We all know that imitation is a form of flattery, and you know you have made it when there are scores of Elvira impersonators. Ms. Peterson is still very active as she makes appearances all over the country and around the globe. However, we still enjoy the image she created, that Valley girl persona we know as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
And the Mistress of the Dark still looks good these days. Check out the Elvira Knott's Scary Farm show from last year!
